Dolphin on Fly While Stuart Deep Sea Fishing

Dolphin on Fly While Stuart Deep Sea Fishing

The ocean was an amazing azure blue and flat as liquid glass out of Stuart, FL.  The boat was drifting as if suspended between two other worlds of brilliant blue sky and the world of gin clear water below.  It is hard to judge depth in ocean water that is so clean and pure – fish just appear from nowhere gliding up to see what you are and if there are morsels good to eat.  It was on one of these days when the boat was drifting motionless in the heat and stillness of a Florida summer day when I looked over the side and saw a small school of dolphin circling the boat.  I rushed into the cabin and unlimbered my 10 weight fly rod.  I was so excited I was shaking trying to on a fly.  This was my first and as good a chance as I was ever going to have to hook a dolphin on fly with Captain Wayne Fellows!

I went to the back of the boat ready to cast.   A dolphin swam past the transom about 20 yards off- standing in the corner of boat I back cast to my right side parallel and down the side of the boat and towards the bow then out into the blue- as soon as the fly hit the water I slowly stripped back in and on this first cast the dolphin saw the fly and made its move- I couldn’t believe my luck!  He gulped down the fly and took off- I held the rod pointed at the fish and jerked back on the line to set the hook- as soon as he felt the hook set he leapt three great jumps and pulled the line tight.  I held the line tight against the rod and I reeled in the slack and now I had the fish on rod and real.  He made a couple of good runs and I just watched, savoring the moment!   I began to reel him in and I called for the gaff- he made a couple of good turns at boat side and he was gaffed and brought on board.  I have great memories of the day, the picture you see above, and oh did I tell you, it was not a really BIG dolphin, it was just my first on fly!

Stuart Deep Sea Fishing is absolutely incredible this time of year. Our Captain’s have the pleasure of fishing with Pablo Sierra and a group of his friends. The boat was loaded and these gentlemen were looking to get into some quality pelagic species. Luckily, they were in store for an excellent day on the water. If you are looking for a wide variety of species, you have to come visit Florida and more specifically Stuart.

Beautiful weather and perfect fishing conditions led to a strong bite right off the bat. Pablo and his friends reeled in numbers of fish of each species. Adventuring offshore is like adventuring into the unknown. You never know what is going to bite the line. Pablo and his crew got the chance to experience some of the best species to catch. They started out with the bonito then they caught a barracuda. These fish were just getting their arms warm for what was to come. After these species were caught, schools of blackfin tuna came up and they started putting them in the boat as well. It was not long after this that the Mahi-Mahi showed up. They did not catch a bull but put several quality fish in the boat. After trolling live bait and ballyhoo, they slowed down their fishing tactics and landed some bottom fish including snapper.

Finally, we get to the catch of the day. Pablo and his friends landed a beautiful sailfish while fishing with live bait. The bait of choice was a google-eye. They also love to eat pilchards and blue runners. Whatever live bait you can get your hands on will provide you the best chance to catch that trophy fish. As a result, you have much great success putting a wide variety of species in the boat. Sailfish put up an excellent fight truly worth experiencing.

Certainly, this amazing group of men had a fantastic time cruising offshore. The ability to relax, sit back and enjoy a couple of cold ones while reeling in fish is what life is all about. Bring your family and friends on a fishing adventure of a lifetime. You never know what you will catch and every fishing trip is a new adventure.

Furthermore, one of the many benefits of fishing out of Stuart is that you can come back and enjoy downtown Stuart after your trip. Give your captain some time after the trip to clean your fish and you can take it to the local restaurant to have them cook it up. There is no better way to end a day of fishing then relaxing with your friends, enjoying the Stuart views, beaches and eating your fresh catch!

Captain Barker is looking forward to the next opportunity to take out Pablo and his crew. They were awesome to fish with and they absolutely had a blast.
